GoRed

American Heart Month is about more than wearing red on the first Friday of February. It's about taking action to prevent heart disease and stroke.

The risk is real because heart disease and stroke kills one woman every 80 seconds. Your best defense is education and here’s how you can "Go Red."

G: GET YOUR NUMBERS

Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure and cholesterol and then find your "heart age" using this online calculator.

O: OWN YOUR LIFESTYLE

If you smoke, you need to stop. Exercise for 30 minutes a day on most days of the week. You can walk the dog, step on the treadmill, play outside with the kids, use a workout video or even dance. Eat "clean" with more whole grains and lean meats and avoid foods high in sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol.

R: REALIZE YOUR RISK

Heart disease kills one of three women and family history can play a factor. Think about who in your immediate family has suffered a heart attack or had heart disease and share this with your doctor.

E: EDUCATE YOUR FAMILY

Exercise and healthy eating is easier when you do it together. You can set an example and get support by sharing a heart-healthy lifestyle with your family.

D: DON’T BE SILENT

Tell every woman you know that heart disease is our number-one killer.

Watch this video from the American Heart Association and then talk with us about your risk factors and the ways to protect yourself from heart disease and stroke.
