Hospital Packing List 200 x 200

It’s the stuff of classic sitcoms. A pregnant woman is ready to head to the hospital to have the baby, but her bag’s gone missing. Or worse, the father brought the wrong one!

That may be cute on TV, but there’s nothing funny about not having the things you need when you’re at the hospital delivering a baby. So, what should you bring?

Before we answer the “what” question, let’s talk about when you should pack your hospital bag. Week 32 is typically a good time to get it done, but if you’re having twins or experiencing a high-risk pregnancy you’ll want to have that hospital bag ready by Week 30, in case labor comes early.

Your needs may vary, but these items are considered “must-haves” when you’re heading to the hospital to have a baby:

  • Photo ID, insurance info, hospital forms and your birth plan (if you have one).
  • Comfortable slippers or sandals and several pairs of non-skid socks to help you safely navigate those well-polished hospital floors.
  • Cotton underwear and a robe or sweater that you won’t mind being ruined.
  • Two maternity bras (no underwire) and nursing pads.
  • Several sets of loose, lightweight clothing with tops that you can button up or pull down when nursing.
  • A headband or ponytail holder.
  • Lip balm and sugar-free candy or lozenges to keep your mouth from getting dry during labor.
  • Toiletries and personal care items (Those travel-sized bottles are great!)
  • Your favorite healthy snacks - so you don’t have to settle for what’s in the vending machine.
  • A charger for your phone or other devices.
  • Books, magazines, a laptop or a tablet for entertainment.
  • Comfortable “going home” clothes.

Don’t forget to bring two outfits for the baby – one newborn and a 0-3-month size -- with footies or socks. And have the infant car seat installed and ready to use because you won’t be allowed to drive your baby home without one. If you need help getting the seat installed properly (it can be tricky) check with your local Highway Patrol, State Police or Auto Club for assistance.
